Cathy Hickey Honored at 2017 Gala

A crowd of 200 guests enjoyed 2017 SBEF gala on November 15 at the Yale Club in midtown Manhattan. The evening focused on honoring Cathy Hickey and her 30 years of involvement at Rosedale and SBEF, including 28 years as a board member. The event raised more than $150,000 to support the virtuebased academic enrichment programs at the Rosedale Achievement Center for girls and the Crotona Achievement Center for boys.

The MC for the event was Adhemar Montagne, who, as morning news anchor for NY1’s Spanish edition, is a familiar face in the Bronx.

A new attraction at the gala this year was a silent auction which included original artwork, tickets to a NY Giants football game, a weekend at a ski house in Vermont and several other attractive items.

In his remarks, Board Chair, David Gallagher, expressed thanks to Patrick Mata of Olé Wines, to SBEF’s New York City Marathon runners (James Finnegan and Luz Velazquez), to Concordia Conservatory and its Executive Director, Kathleen Suss who run Rosedale’s music program, and to Rosedale Alums Crystal Naraine and Luz Velasquez who a year ago started a Saturday Leadership Club at Rosedale.

Lauren Green from Fox News, a long-time friend of Cathy, read Cathy’s remarks and also added some of her own about Cathy and her recent loss. It was a very moving moment and added to the feeling of how beloved Cathy is by everyone in and around SBEF. Rosedale alumna, Stephanie Frias, who had planned to give Cathy a bouquet of flowers spoke very briefly but also quite movingly about her relationship with Cathy over the years and how ready Cathy was to help her whenever she needed her.

Unfortunate, the honoree, Cathy Hickey, was not able to be in attendance due to a death in her family a few days earlier. Despite her absence, David Gallagher expressed how much everyone in the SBEF organization appreciated Cathy with her unflagging optimism, determination and enthusiasm for helping the boys and girls in the Bronx

Our thanks go to the Gala Committee and especially to Chairs Darrell and Jessica Cafasso, and to Betty Ontiveros who single-handedly organized the silent auction.
