SBEF Programs to be Discontinued

We are sorry to announce that the SBEF Board of Directors has made the decision to discontinue the programs at Rosedale and Crotona after the end of this school year. The programs will be discontinued as of May 31, 2020.

There are several reasons for this decision: a combination of long-term trends in enrollment, retaining staff, procuring adequate funding, and increasing numbers of similar programs in the South Bronx.

We would like to thank all those who have supported SBEF’s programs over the years as staff, board, parents, volunteers, and donors. The success of the programs has always depended on all of these persons working as a team: “Together we can”!

Your work and contributions have born much fruit over the 40+ years that the programs have been operating. They have helped hundreds of kids, and a large number of them will always say that the programs changed their lives for the better and that they would not be where they are today without them. The efforts of so many people, happily, will live on in the Bronx for years to come.

Together We Can!

SBEF's mission is to promote the academic and personal achievement of young men and women in the Bronx through focusing on the development of the whole person.

What a summer!  With just about 60 boys in the program guided by a team of 12 group leaders, every day was an adventure at Crotona.  From building model cars, to studying George Washington's Rules of Civility, to hiking to the top of Bear Mountain, all of our boys (and volunteers and staff included) took strides   in their struggles to grow in the good habits that together shape our character.  This year was a special one at Crotona given that we got to host the program at Crotona itself.  We made use of every nook and cranny and brought the house to full life!  On the evening of Friday, August 9th we welcomed all our families to the house for the Awards Ceremony and party, and what a blast it was!  A big thank you to all of our parents for your support throughout the program--and for braving Bronx traffic every morning and afternoon for your sons!  See you back at Crotona this September and next summer!

For a full week, 25 girls attended the Culinary Art classes scheduled by Rosedale as part of the Summer Program.

Crotona Recap: Summer 2018

This summer over 60 boys and a dedicated team of 15 volunteers from all over the country came together at Crotona's Achievement Program in the Bronx for the same purpose: to grow in character and serve others.  With a packed schedule of challenging activities, ranging from reading The Hobbit as a group to hiking in the Hudson Valley, the boys and their volunteers developed friendships and had countless opportunities to put the human virtues into practice.  Read more and watch video.

Anthony Diké, a graduating Crotona high school student, was checking emails on his phone last March 30. One grabbed his attention: a message from NYU with a link to his application account. He followed the link. The account read, “Accepted.”

Anthony dropped his cell phone to the ground, overjoyed (an old phone, fortunately). Moments later, he gathered himself and began sending messages to family and friends.

Crotona Graduating Senior Awarded
Full Scholarship to NYU!

I am a Texan. In Texas, the Bronx is something you see in movies or read in newspapers. I met the real Bronx in the summer of 2016 through the South Bronx Educational Foundation, where I volunteered as a senior counselor at the Crotona Achievement Program and was responsible for teaching, coaching, and mentoring a group of 7th and 8th grade boys.
