I have been a volunteer at Rosedale Center for the past four years. I started by running a Great Books Club for the
advanced readers, the following year I taught a Remedial Reading Class. Each semester I
teach whatever is necessary; next semester I will run a Scrabble Club.
Recently when the director asked me to teach a COOP
[now called TACHS] Prep course, to help the girls with the entrance exam into Catholic high
schools, I realized that I needed a math whiz to help me.
I called upon An. Although An is from Vietnam , we have a lot in common; we both graduated from Our Lady of
Refuge School in the Bronx and then went to Mt. St. Ursula for high school (An, Class '03 and me '59). But we are quite different in other respects. An has received 100 percent on every
Math Regents
and is currently taking advanced calculus. I avoided everything mathematical and became an English teacher. This difference has made us a great team!
An generously accepted the challenge even though she has a full schedule and hours of homework. The nine 8th graders in
the course look up to An as a big sister. Between math examples, they ask her about boys.
In January, they'll get their official scores, but all the girls are confident that they did very well on the test:
"It was easy; Kay and An taught us all that stuff!"
