Rosedale, a Place to Blossom
by Dina,
Rosedale Student, 1994-2001
Freshman, Stony Brook University
My memories of Rosedale…
“I remember Debbie, one of my tutors.
I remember how tutoring helped me with my English.
I remember how it helped me with my math.
I remember it introducing me to new and exciting places.
I remember it helping me grow mentally and socially. I remember how it played a role in shaping the person I became.
‘Rosedale, a place to blossom.’
That has always been Rosedale’s motto.
No one better than I know the truth that it holds.
Before Rosedale, I was a very introverted girl and did not speak much because I was afraid too.
Rosedale introduced me to new and exciting people who taught me how to express myself freely in a way that I had never done before.
I became more outgoing and learned to view the world in different ways.
I saw that I too could make a difference. Rosedale helped me on my way to becoming the person I am today.
I have been a Rosedale girl for many years.
After being a student in the tutoring program, I went on to becoming a teacher’s assistant for the summer academic program. The next summer, I moved on to helping Sarah Trimmer as an office intern.
During the Saturday Club, held throughout the academic school year, I was another teacher’s assistant for arts and crafts.
This was very important to me because it allowed me to interact more and become familiar with the students. Soon I was even giving virtue talks on important things like respect and responsibility. I talked
to the girls on how to be respectful towards others and themselves and how to become responsible young women. Virtue talks are an essential part of Rosedale.
As I look back and reflect on the many things that the program helped me achieve, I feel blessed that such a program existed and honored to have
been a part of it.
When I look at the faces of the girls who are now in the club, I see the hope and the bright future that awaits them.
I am grateful that they too have Rosedale to turn to.
It’s a place where young girls learn to expand their horizons and in fact it is a foundation for the outstanding women that they will become.
I am presently a freshman at Stony Brook University. I hope to major in biology and become a researcher.
